My biggest challenge growing strawberries – getting to harvest them before our dog! There are 2 things she will absolutely devour from the garden – 1. Sugar Snaps & 2. Strawberries!
But here’s a growing tip I learned from a long-time strawberry farmer – fight against the urge to leave those runners & pinch them off! With most strawberry plants, they’ll start to grow what’s called “stolons” aka - “runners,” which is a long stem that will put off new roots and start growing a new strawberry plant. The problem with that - the plant will put all its energy into growing that second plant, that it will stunt the growth and production of strawberries on the existing plant. So, in my opinion - instead of multiplying from one plant, just buy extra & keep those runners trimmed off 🤗 With doing so, you’ll get a lot more strawberry production per plant.
At the end of the day, you can grow them either way - but keeping those runners clipped off will produce more strawberries (& faster) 🍓💨
Until then, happy gardening & I’ll just be here standing watch for these to ripen so I can enjoy them before my pup!
Do you have pups who enjoy straight from the garden? If so, please 🙏 share their favorites below in the comments 🐶 ♥️
