How to Grow - Sugar Snaps

Updated: Jan 10, 2024

Growing Sugar Snaps & peas alike might be easier to grow than you might think and perfect for beginners!

For new gardeners – “Sow” is defined as planting seeds directly in ground 😊 As opposed to transplanting a seedling.

There are several varieties of peas, beautiful sugar snaps, purple varieties, regular green peas, all of which you can source from Botanical Interests (Use Code SunwoodLane5 for 5% off!) – my favorite seed Company out there!

When planting peas, it’s recommended to pre-soak the seeds for 12-24 hours in advance. This is NOT

required, but it definitely helps with the germination process by absorbing water & softening their outer shell.

Sow the seeds 1-2” deep, and 1-3” apart. Remember that these will require a trellis as they grow tall, so be sure to select a space that won’t shadow other plants, and that will give you enough space to add a trellis.

We added 2 wood posts to either side of our bed, with one running across the top. From there, I use twine to run line down to the peas once they’ve sprouted and are at least 4” tall or once they begin to droop over.

This is a very easy vegetable to grow & excellent for new gardeners. If you have dogs – good luck, because they might harvest the peas for you, before you even get a chance to! Lol…

Last thing – we also recommend sowing a new set of peas every 2 weeks or so, which will give you a great yield all season long!

Happy Gardening!
